Shopify Partner Directory for freelancers: who can get listed

Many freelancers go looking for the old Shopify Experts Marketplace and find a different page. Shopify replaced it with the Partner Directory in October 2023, according to Shopify's help center (opened 2026-10-09). The listing rules are tied to the Shopify Partner Program tiers, and they are steeper than many freelancers expect. This guide sets out what Shopify says and what to do if a listing is not within reach yet.

What the Partner Directory is

It is a public directory where merchants can find Shopify Partners. You do not apply in the usual sense. Per Shopify's eligibility page, partners in the Plus, Premier and Platinum tiers are invited to join on an ongoing basis, and a limited number of Registered tier partners are also eligible. If you qualify, you get an invitation to create and publish a profile.

What Shopify says you need

From the eligibility page (opened in full on 2026-10-09). To be eligible you must stay in good standing under the Partner Program Agreement and the tiering guide, and reach Plus tier or higher. Plus is the minimum for guaranteed eligibility. Plus needs two things.

Commercial impact. One of these revenue dimensions:

  • Referral and co-sell revenue of at least $500k USD a year to Shopify from merchants acquired in the last 5 years, or
  • Existing merchant revenue of at least $2.5M USD a year to Shopify from merchants you have active collaborator relationships with, acquired in the last 5 years,

plus a deal minimum: at least 2 Plus or Enterprise merchant shops, or 40 Standard merchant shops, acquired over the last 5 years.

Credentials. A minimum of 10 Shopify Verified Skills attained across all active employees at your partner organization, with at least 3 people having earned at least one Verified Skill.

Promotions are evaluated quarterly and tier changes take effect on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.

We did not open the Partner Program Tiering Guide, so we cannot say what the Registered tier requires or how Shopify picks the Registered partners that get a listing. Read the guide if you want that detail.

What that means for a solo freelancer

Read as plainly as possible, the revenue and shop-count thresholds are written for agencies and larger partners. A single developer doing small fixes and theme work is unlikely to meet the Plus requirements soon, and the credentials rule counts people at the partner organization. We are not saying it is impossible; some solo partners may reach a qualifying tier. We just have no data on how many do, and Shopify does not publish it on that page.

So the useful question is not "how do I get into the directory" but "where does work come from while I am not listed". Some ideas, none of which depend on the directory:

  • Collaborator access with real clients. Shopify describes collaborator accounts as the recommended way to work in a store, so asking merchants for that access instead of a password is the standard way in. Whether it leads to repeat work is up to you.
  • Agency overflow and subcontracting. Some agencies bring in outside help when demand spikes. See white-label Shopify developer work for agencies for how those arrangements are structured.
  • Public requests for help. Merchants and founders post what they need in communities and boards. How to find freelance clients from public hiring posts covers a simple routine for that.
  • Verified Skills. Shopify counts them in its tier rules. If you plan to grow into a small team, collect them as a signal of capability. We did not open the page describing how they are earned, so check the current program details.
  • Your own site. A short page for one service, with examples you are allowed to show, is something you control whatever Shopify does.

If you get invited

If a directory invitation reaches you, write the profile like a short service page: what you fix or build, the kinds of stores you handle, and how quickly you reply. Keep it honest and specific. We have no data on how listings convert, so measure it yourself by asking new clients how they found you.
